a three bedroom, Type II single family dwelling with an estimated daily flow from the residence of
300 gallons per day.
To allow for the shallow subsurface drain field with a vertical separation distance of I foot from the
bottom of the drain field trenches to redoximorphic features, peat filters with a 2 foot depth will need
to be installed to pre-treat the effluent prior to drain field dispersal. This type of system is
commonly referred to as a "2 + 1" and is allowed in Minnesota Rules Chapter 7080 as an Other
System.
E. Description of Treatment Process
• Primary Treatment - Sewage is gravity discharged from the house to a septic tank. Natural
biological activities taking place inside of the septic tank will separate solids and suspended
particles. Solids are reduced to some extent through this process.
• Secondary Treatment — Effluent from the septic tank gravity flows into the pumping chamber.
Effluent is pumped to a distribution manifold in the Puraflo Peat Biofilter on a timed basis. Effluent
percolates down through the peat media and drains out the bottom of the filter pod. The treated
effluent flows out of the filter pod to the pumping chamber directed to the drain field. Anticipated
treatment levels are expected to exceed a 90% reduction of BOD, TSS, total coliforms, and
pathogens.
• Final Treatment — Effluent is directed to a new 204 square foot drain field. As the effluent
trickles down into the soil biochemical processes remove the few remaining viruses and bacteria.
F. Descriudon of Treatment Svstem (See figures, design sheets, and manufacturer sheets for
additional detail.)
• Septic Tank — (1) 1,500 gallon fiberglass septic tank. Install septic tank per manufacturer's
recommendations.
• Pump Tank — 1,000 gallon two comparhnent fiberglass septic tank, two 500 gallon
compartments. T'he first compartment will contain an efIluent that will deliver effluent on a timed
basis to the peat filter pods. The second compartment will contain an efIIuent pump that will
dischazge to the first drop box in the drain field on a demand basis. Install septic tank per
manufacturer's recommendations.
• Septic Tank Risers — 24" diameter heavy corrugated PVC pipe. A watertight seal must be
created between top of tank and the each riser.
• Septic Tank Riser Cover — 24" diameter fiberglass cover with gasket. Tank riser covers should
include insulation. Do not bury riser cover.
• Pumps — Effluent pump to be selected to deliver a minimum of 20 gallons per minute with 20
feet of head to the peat filters. Effluent pump to be selected to deliver a minimum of 10 gallons per
2

;
;
