Lyle Oman - FW: Old Eric Smith Dump, Orono -Iy5 (3--own( -o AfJ SO. Page 1
From: "Stahnke, Gerald" <gerald.stahnke@pca.state.mn.us>
To: 'L oman Orono' <loman@ci.orono.mn.us>
Date: 7/2/02 1:33PM
Subject: FW: Old Eric Smith Dump, Orono
> Today, I was made aware by phone call about the old Eric Smith dump in Orono. You informed me that
between the 1930's and 1960's dump debris was placed into a wetland on this property and that some of
the debris is sticking out while in other areas sinkholes have developed and the owners would like to
establish better cover on the dump but because of the wetland, doing so would be in violation of
Minnehaha Watershed district rules.
>
> I am enclosing a Best Management Practices for Dumps Fact Sheet. It should show that in general,
the MPCA is recommending that these old dumps receive proper cover and vegetation and they file on
the property deed. I suggest that you try to work out an acceptable closure plan with the Watershed
District. If needed, I would be willing to meet with you at the Site to see first hand what needs to occur
and/or to talk to the Watershed District for a free 1 hr consultation, however should you require my time on
an ongoing basis, somebody would have to join the VIC program and agree to reimburse MPCA staff time
for overseeing the project. I may be reached at 651-297-1459 > > «DumpBMP»
>
