04500 Masonry Fireplace <br /> A. Construct masonry fireplace as shown on the Drawings and specified herein. <br /> B. Foundation walls, structural slab for support of fireplace, interior and exterior stone veneer, and extended <br /> hearth are work under other sections of the Technical Specifications: <br /> a. Foundation Walls: Section 04220 CONCRETE BLOCK <br /> b. Structural Slab: Section 03300 CAST-IN-PLACE CONCRETE <br /> c. Stone Veneer: Section 04400 STONE. <br /> d. Extended Hearth: Section 06420 CUSTOM COUNTERTOPS. <br /> C. Fireplace Materials: <br /> 1. Back-Up Walls: Hollow or solid clay masonry; minimum four inches (4") thick; designed to support loads <br /> of smoke chamber and chimney. <br /> 2. Inner Hearth (floor of combustion chamber): ASTM C 27; refractory brick, minimum four inches (4")thick. <br /> 3. Combustion Chamber: ASTM C 27; refractory brick, minimum four inches (4") thick. <br /> 4. Mortar: ASTM C 199, medium duty; refractory mortar. <br /> 5. Steel Lintel: ASTM A 36; structural steel; shapes and sizes required for Project conditions. <br /> 6. Damper: Sheet metal at fireplace throat or top of chimney—verify with the Architect. <br /> 7. Throat: Cast refractory or formed clay masonry. <br /> 8. Flue Liner: ASTM C 315; formed clay masonry units. <br /> D. Design, select materials and construct single-face masonry fireplace in accordance with recommendations by <br /> Brick Institute of America and applicable building codes. <br /> E. Verify exact fireplace opening dimensions with the Architect. <br /> F. Construct refractory brick combustion chamber walls with maximum 1/4 inch thick mortar joints and minimum <br /> one inch (1") air space between combustion chamber and masonry back-up. Fill air space with <br /> noncombustible fibrous insulation. <br /> G. Completely parge inside face of smoke chamber with refractory mortar. <br /> H. Provide and install loose steel lintel required for support of masonry above fireplace opening. <br /> I. Provide tight-fitting exterior air intake louver, insulated duct, and interior damper for combustion air.
