Perform all earthwork operations shown on the Drawings, specified herein, and as may be required for
complete foundation excavation, backfilling and rough grading of the site for construction of the building,
paving systems and landscaped areas.
B. Determine locations of existing underground utilities. Perform work in a manner which will avoid possible
damage to existing utilities- hand excavate. The Excavation Subcontractor shall be responsible for protection
of existing underground utilities, and if damage to utilities should occur, the Excavation Subcontractor shall be
responsible for restoration of damaged utilities at no expense to the Owner.
C. Protect existing public and private structures, utilities, sidewalks, pavements and other facilities from damage
caused by earthwork operations.
D. Install siltation fence(s) outside of excavation limits and conduct earthwork operations so as to minimize
erosion of soils and to prevent silting and muddying of streams, irrigation systems and impoundments (lakes,
reservoirs, etc.). Completely remove erosion control devices at Substantial Completion of the Work.
1. Fence: "Envirofence" Mirafi, Inc., Charlotte, North Carolina); or equal.
E. Unless otherwise shown on the Drawings or directed by the Architect, confine site clearing operations to
areas of excavation, filling or grading. Retain trees and shrubs noted on the Drawings to remain, or as
directed by the Architect. Adequately protect such trees and shrubs, throughout duration of the Work.
Remove and dispose of off-site, existing trees and brush in any area of the site to be excavated, including
within building and paving areas and where utilities occur.
F. Soils:
1. Fill material shall be non-expansive, free of organics, trash, foreign matter and deleterious substances.
a. Underfooting (if required — unless determined to be unsuitable, intent is to place footings on natural,
undisturbed soils): Well graded or poorly graded sands and gravely sands with little or no fines, as
defined by USCS Group Symbol "SW" or"SP"
b. Underslab (if required — unless determined to be unsuitable, intent is to use excavated soils for
underslab fill): Well graded or poorly graded sands and gravely sands with little or no fines, as
defined by USCS Group Symbol "SW" or"SP"
c. Slab Bases:
— Floor Slabs: Minimum six inches (6") free-draining coarse sand or gravel, with less than five
percent (5%) passing No. 200 sieve
— Bituminous Paving: Refer to Section 02730 BITUMINOUS PAVING
— Concrete Paving and Walks: Referto Section 02750 CONCRETE PAVING.
2. Backfill and Other Subsoil: Best on-site material available for placement beneath topsoil.
3. Topsoil: Material stripped from the Project site.
4. Surplus: Deposit, compact and grade excess excavated material on site where shown on the Drawings
or as directed by the Acchitect.
G. Strip all topsoil within limits of excavation and stockpile in approved location. Re-installation of topsoil is not
included in the Work of the Contract. Coordinate with the Landscape Contractor.
H. Earthwork at Building Areas:
1. Excavate foundation areas down to natural undisturbed soils or to depths shown on the Drawings,
whichever is greater. If soil at footing elevation is considered to be undesirable for foundation bearing,
immediately contact the Architect prior to proceeding with additional excavation. The Owner will
reimburse the Contractor for any over-excavation required to expose soils suitable for load bearing and
any engineered fill, as may be applicable.
2. Properly compact entire building area, including fill below underslab areas.
I. Earthwork at Pavement Areas:
1. Excavate pavement areas down to natural undisturbed soils to depths required for paving systems:
a. Concrete Walks: Eight inches (8") below finish grade
b. Bituminous Paving: Thirteen inches (13") below finish grade.
2. If soil at base course elevation is considered to be undesirable for paving system installation, immediately
contact the Architect prior to proceeding with additional excavation. The Owner will reimburse the
Contractor for any over-excavation required to expose soils suitable for carrying paving systems and any
engineered fill, as may be applicable.
633 SPECIFICATIONS
Page 14
