lministrativa Ne
This is the time of year whom schc.ol officials get
nervous about funding. The legislature it in session
and rusurs abound as to what level of funding will
-)v .vailable to public: school districts. Tie uncer-
tainty about funding makre. -l&Y-0 difficult. As
we anticipate the needs for the •19$8 school
year, we will not know the amount of revenue avall-
able until the legislative session closes.
As we view the funding proposals before the lsgie-
lature, our concern is heightened. The modis has
carried articles noting as ouch as a 141 increase
for public school* over the biennium If the Gover-
%of's proposal becomes law. To be sure. the Gover-
nor's proposal does provide about 142 f-r public
schools. However, there is no direct Increase of
revenue by 141 for each school utstrict.
: r analysis of the G)vernor's proposal reveals that
the acewal Increase to the Otonc schools 1s about
?I per year or 41 for the biennium. Then. because
th• Goveriser's proposal includes passing along soma
now costa to school districts, we need to make sub-
tractions from the 41. Those new costs include
such Items as teacher retirement contributions and
the payment of &alas taxes by public schools. The
net result is difficult to calculate precisely, but
a total Increase of 11 for the blennius or even an
actual loss of total revenue Is possible.
l hevr used this colwmm to convey this Information
to v,•a since the improsston Is so widespread that
large funding Increases are going to each school
district. The state's percentage increase for pub-
lic schools and the percentage Increase for our
school district are two distinct matters.
If may of this causes you to have gwestle" or con-
cerns.
