103186.8A
TO: Mayor and City Council
Mark Bernhardson, City Administrator
FROM: Lorraine McGowan, Liquor Store Manager
DATE: November 5, 1986
SUBJECT: Orono Liquor Store
After the 1.985 loss (the first in 20 years) I understood we had a
year to turn things around before a final decision would be made
as to the sale of the store. Our emp luyees and myse f received
no pay increases, the two full time personnel hours were cut plus
the odd hours worked were at the store's needs, my hours were
long but we were willing to work hard at it to get the store
going again and make a profit. I can not say enough about my
staff because with all our efforts things have turned around and
we are looking towards a $20,000 profit for 1986. ('Which is an
increase of close to $28,000 over last yea- - a loss of $8,000.)
Our sales by the end of '86 will be increased close to $50,000.
This could not have been done without devoted hard working
employees.
The liquor business is unlike other businesses as so many things
effect it. New laws, taxes (state and federal) the economy and
the new trends in the industry. vie have had to change with the
times - for example 20 years ago wine was not even 1% of our
bisiness, now it is 30.38%. Our wine department is noted to be
one of the best in the area.
Our store is unique, as we serve a vast variety of people, so our
wide selection, service and quality of help has given the store a
reputation of being one of the best in the area. All of us had
one goal - to make Orono Liquor a store the City and the people
could be proud of and to make a profit for the City. I feel we
have done that over the past 20 years.
Listed below are the years and their net income:
1965
$ 8,469
1976
$38,124
66
22,995
77
30,623
67
21,974
78
41,777
68
18,354
79
35,710
69
37,467
80
44,262
70
24,420
81
57,168
71
27,117
82
32,961
72
29,174
83
21,203
3
31,353
84
9,128
'4
39,296
85
- 8,594
75
37,077
Total Income 1965-85 = $600,054
An average of $28,574 per year
Average income past 5 years = $22,373
1
