IW,E <br />June 2, 1977 <br />Board of Commissioners of the Hennepin County Park Reserve <br />District accepted the donation of 54 (plus or minus) acres <br />of land on Big Island from the Metropolitan Park <br />Foundation. The land was acquired through the efforts of <br />the Greater Lake Minnetonka Council for preservation as a <br />wildlife sanctuary (Arthur Allen Wildlife Sanctuary). <br />January 5, 1978 <br />Hennepin County Park Reserve District's Board of <br />Commissioners authorized that in cooperation with the City <br />of Orono, and the Metropolitan Council that the District <br />seek legislative conveyance of the Big Island Disabled <br />American Veterans Camp for use as a public park. <br />February 7, 1978 <br />Park Reserve District and the City of Orono held a joint <br />public information meeting to review proposed land <br />acquisition boundary and the preliminary development <br />concept plan for Big Island Regional Park. <br />March 8, 1978 <br />Board of Commissioners of the Hennepin County Park Reserve <br />District approved Big Island Regional Park land acquisition <br />boundary. Board declared that the regional park is to be <br />located entirely on the east island of Big Island. <br />Board of Commissioners approved the purchase of an 8 (plus <br />or minus) -acre parcel of land located within the approved <br />park boundary. Purchase price was offset in part by the <br />exchange of the 3 (plus or minus) -acre parcel of land owned <br />by the District on the west island (former Specht <br />property), declared by the Board to be surplus property. <br />Board of Commissioners approved the purchase of two plat`..--d <br />lots on the north shore of Big Island (William Crear III <br />property). <br />August 3, 1978 <br />Board of Commissioners approved the purchase of a 2.3 (plus <br />or minus) -acre parcel of land located in the southern <br />portion of Big Island (Robert H. Olin property). <br />January 4, 1979 <br />Board of Commissioners approved a revised 1979-1983 Land <br />Acquisition Capital Improvement Program for submission to <br />the Metropolitan Council including Big Island Regional Park. <br />March 5, 1981 <br />Board of Commissioners approves purchase of two platted <br />lots with seasonal dwelling on north shore of Big Island <br />(Lyons property). <br />June 30, 1982 <br />Orono City Council holds public hearing to consider study <br />report of Big Island zoning and buildings. Council <br />subsequently adopts 5-acre minimum building site (for new <br />platting) and establishes "existing non -conforming" lots. <br />
