ticipating districts with encouragement that these districts support our <br />position. <br />UPON MOTION by Lucie Taylor, seconded by Jim Franklin, the Board directed <br />Chairman David McKown to send a letter to the 13 participating districts <br />requesting their support of the resolution as adopted by the Orono School Board. <br />Dr. Mich reported that the start of the school year had been excellent and that <br />the principals and teachers are to be commended for their <br />organization/preparation for the 1986-87 school year. <br />UPON MOTION by Don Anderson, seconded by Kitty Crosby, the Board approved the <br />Cooks' Employment Agreement for 1986-88. <br />Ron Gilbert reported that the opening of the Intermediate School went quite well <br />with only minor problems and that the credit for the good opening belongs to the <br />teachers who have worked diligently to develop philosophy and goals to which <br />they will trive, to develop schedules/assignments, and to revise curriculum <br />matters. He stated that the students are adjusting to the situation quite <br />easily and that parents have bcec, supportive. Mr. Gilbert expressed that this <br />is an exciting and thrilling challenge/opportunity. The Board asked questions <br />of Mr. Gilbert regarding bussing, transitian between Schumann Elementary and the <br />Intermediate School and provision for additional recess time. Mr. Gilbert will <br />report back to the Board with regard to additional recess time. Appreciation <br />was expressed by Mr. Gilbert to the custodial staff for the outstanding job they <br />had -e in preparation for the beginning of the school year. <br />UPON MOTION by Lucie Taylor, seconded by Jim Franklin, the Board accepted the <br />Intermediate School nandbook as presented. <br />Karen Orcutt provided background information to the Board regarding Chapter I <br />funds available to school districts who have local institutions for <br />neglected/delinquent children. A grant for this project would provide one <br />period of remedial instruction per day and a base from which the'7e students <br />could operate their academic day. Ms. Orcutt stated that Orono i, eligible for <br />thi; project and, with Board approval, she would apply for a y,ont for a one <br />ypa pilot project. <br />UP )N by Kitty Crosby, seconded by Don Anderson, approval was granted to <br />mak ication for a grant to pilot a p.-ogram for Neglected and Delinquent <br />Stuo ,:Secondary -tilizing Chapter I funds for 1986-87. <br />The Board expressed] appreciation to Ms. Orcutt for taking the initiative in <br />researching/providing the District with such a program which will provide addi- <br />tional serv; a to these students and requested that Ms. Orcutt provide them with <br />a synopsis of the program at the end of the school year. <br />UPON MOTION by Don Anderson, seconded by Lucie Taylor, the Board accepted the <br />appraisal of Stevenson -Edwards on the District's school buildings and contents, <br />will continue to affiliate with the Minnesota School Board Association Insurance <br />Trust for property and casualty insurance coverage, and named the Thomas Taff <br />Agenr, 1< the District's service representative. <br />
