David Fortier presented disabled Focus Group results.
The disabled needs' results and input from the public reinforced,
and positively supported the Dream 2001 planning process and the
architectural plans that were presented and submitted to the Board.
The 1997 Camp Season Plans were presented. The City of Orono has
approved 1997 Camp permit and authorized 30 camp sites. The 1997
Camp Plan was endorsed, with a strong recommendation to provide
more advertisement about the Camp to achieve greater Camp usage.
Each Board of Governor member was asked to volunteer two Saturdays
in 1997 to assist in Camp registration and related duties to obtain
greater insight into the day-to-day Camp activities and needs. A
Board letter has been sent to the Mn National Guard's Major General
requesting assistance to develop 30 camp sites and assist with
filling of old septic systems, which are in code violation.
Fund raising to meet the 1997 season needs was discussed. Public
input indicated a greater need to document daily camp usage. It
should be noted that this will be done in 1997. Emil Sulander
strongly urged every Board member to take a more active role
in fund raising, particularly among the veteran groups that they
represent. The attached 1997 Camp needs/funding list was presented
and endorsed.
The City of Orono's Mayor, City Council, Planning Commission, and
City Planners have been very supportive of the Big Island Veterans
Camp. The Orono City Planning Commission and City Council approved
the Board's request to move a 16' X 16' storage shed to a site near
the dock area and have it remodeled to serve as a Camp Office,
where guests will be greeted and Camp registration and business
will be conducted. Members of the Orono City Council and Lake
Minnetonka Conservation District were in attendance. An informal
meeting with the Board, Larry Wacker, and the Orono City Planners
has been requested to clearly identify all known areas of code and
compliance concerns and issues. Board to set date at April meeting.
NEXT BOARD MEETING: 7:30 P.M. April 28, 1997 at Wayzata Am. Legion
