't" ('pt
f ehruary 24, 1986
Attached to this statement is a copy of my letter to the Orono Council
Planning Commission, City ,:anager, and Staff, dated December 23, 1986.
+,hen I was informed that I had not been Teappointed to the Planningr
Cornmision even though two of my colleagues with identical term
expiration dates were reappointed, it became obvious I would be dropped.
My terra expired December 31, 1985, and s'.r-e Mayor Butler sai" she was
"not comfortable with Bill Sime on the Planning Commission" because she
felt I used my position for other enneavors, it seemed like my letter
of 12-23-85 , gracefully accepting my banishment from the Planning
Commission,should end the subject.
On February 18, 1986 --57 days later-- The Orono City Manager conveye:j
to re a message from the Council that they would like to interview me
for the Planning Commission position that I had served in for the past
three years. This strange deviation from normal policy piqued my
curiosity so I polled some Council members. Sure enough, it was clear
that the majority of the Council is, and was, positively and
unalterably opposed to my reappointment.
The February 18, 1986 issue of the Picneer carried a report on the
February 10th Council meeting and said in part:
"The Council also expressed concern over the apparent
misunderstanding by commission member Bill Sime re-
aarding the appointment of new and reappointment of
existing commission Timbers. 01scassion was tabled
with a special meeting to be arranged soiey for the
discussion of these matters."
I can not possibly imagine ,ih,t earthly purpose my "interview" could
server when the majority of the Council members have already made up
their minis. -his :neetinq is, or was, scheduled to take place some
time in ",arch. .)ver two months after the expiration of the term
V have served the residents of my community well during my three-year
term on the Planning Commission. The chairman, at the close of our
December 16, 1985 meeting indicated his willingness to write a letter
to the Council on my behalf. My colleagues indicated they would also
support my reappointment. Une Council member who is opposed to my
reappointment. told me I should be commenced for my contributions to
Orono.
Why, then, are tha mal -rity c;f the 'Ptineil opposed to appoint.nq me
to a second term?
That same Council member said, "E+ecause Fill simo is not a` tean't•layer."
