Article 3. DEFINITIONS <br />For purposes of these policies, the following definitions will apply: <br />Section 3.01 Authorized Hours <br />The number of hours an employee was hired to work. Actual hours worked during any given pay period <br />may be different than authorized hours, depending on workload demands or other factors, and upon <br />approval of the employee's supervisor. <br />Section 3.02 Benefits <br />Privileges granted to qualified employees in the form of paid leave and/or insurance coverage. <br />Section 3.03 Benefit Earning Employees <br />Employees who are eligible for at least a pro -rated portion of city -provided benefits such as vacation <br />and sick leave. Such employees must be year-round employees who work at least 20 hours per week <br />on a regular basis. <br />Section 3.04 Core Hours <br />The core hours that all employees (exempt and non-exempt) are expected to work are 9 a.m. to 3:30 <br />p.m., Monday through Friday. Police, fire, parks and public works employees do not have core hours <br />and work the schedules established by their supervisors. <br />Section 3.05 Demotion <br />The movement of an employee from one job class to another within the city, where the maximum <br />salary for the new position is lower than that of the employee's former position. <br />Section 3.06 Direct Deposit <br />As permitted by state law, all city employees are required to participate in direct deposit. <br />Section 3.07 Employee <br />An individual who has successfully completed all stages of the selection process, including the training <br />period. <br />Section 3.08 Exempt Employee <br />Employees who are not covered by the overtime provisions of the federal or state Fair Labor Standards <br />Act. <br />Section 3.09 FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act) <br />FICA is the federal requirement that a certain amount be automatically withheld from employees' <br />earnings. Specifically, FICA requires an employee contribution of 6.2 percent for Social Security and <br />1.45 percent for Medicare. The city contributes a matching 7.65 percent on behalf of each employee. <br />Certain employees are exempt or partially exempt from these withholdings (e.g., police officers). These <br />amounts may change if required by law. <br />Section 3.10 Fiscal Year <br />The period from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. <br />Section 3.11 Full -Time Employee <br />Employees who are required to work forty (40) or more hours per week year-round in an ongoing <br />position. <br />Page 16 of 151 <br />iIFIA <br />
