Box 66 <br />Crystal Bay, 14F E,5323 <br />Dear Courcil Member: <br />L _ <br />WY V—6-i,,,: <br />I am writirc to inform you that the Cerartment cf Natural Puscurces (Dij.) <br />will be holding a rublic informational meeting on Tuesday, May 21, 1985, to <br />discuss providing public boat access tc Lake Minnetorka. The meeting, <br />which will begin at 7:30 p.m., will be held in the large auditorium of the <br />Minnetonka Senicr high Schocl, 18301 Highway 7, Minnetonka. <br />The DNR has been seeking additional public access to Lake Pinnetonka fcr a <br />number of years and has accelerated its cffo►ts since 1979 when th^ lake <br />was identifies' ty a three agency task fence, (Metropolitan Cccncil, Drik and <br />State Planning Agency, now the Department cf Energy and Ece omic <br />Development), as a high priority lake in need of additional access. <br />In 19E1, the DNR idcrtified property on IIelsted's Bay, Lake Minnetonka as <br />heina suitehle for public access and a,ith a willirg seller, but by Febrt.ury <br />1982, then Cc,vernor, Al Quie, put a stop to the acguisitior due to <br />opposition from the local community. <br />A task force comprised of citizen members, gcvernnent officials and a <br />chairperson was then formed to address recreeticnal use of Lake Minrctcnka <br />Ord adjacent public lard. 1n a report published it 'une, 1983, the Task <br />Force said that additional pr.Llic accesses were needed on the lake, <br />specifically or the south and west shores, and that irrrrovements to <br />existing accE sites were also required. Also recommended ty the Task <br />Force were additional shore fishing opportunities, primarily by irstallins <br />fishirg piers at various sites un the lake. <br />The public inferritional meetira will corsider the issue of the need for <br />additional are improved access to LakE Minnetonka.
