HOME BUSINESS GROWING IN MINNESOTA <br />THERE may be as many as 179,000 home <br />businesses in Minnesota. The Minnesota <br />Project recently impleted a survey to 1200 <br />home businesses in the state. Based on <br />preliminary survey results, average annual <br />sales per home business were only about <br />$13,400. Rcughly 25 percent of the <br />respondents are considered low income based <br />on incomes beiow 80 percent of the stat, <br />median income. The most frequently ,.s" tioncd <br />business problems were- learning effective <br />marketing techniques, financial management <br />problems, and inadequate workspace. <br />A report summarizing survey res,lts and <br />recommendations o` an advisory committee on <br />nome based and cottage industries will be <br />compli—ed by early October. Groups like Women o <br />Many Voices have observed that AFDC <br />regulations, particularly those that spell <br />out how AFDC recipients can treat assets, are <br />a particular obstacle. Karen Lehman ani <br />Carol Anderson at the Humphrey Institut" <br />recently completed an interesting "Guide to <br />the Possibilities and Pitfalls of Starting a <br />Business as a Low Income Parent," which <br />outlines these problems and suggests <br />solutions. ror copies of the study call the <br />Cooperative Community Development Program at <br />612/376-9798. <br />SURVEYS, SURVEYS, SURVEYS <br />THE Minnesota Project has completed a host o{ <br />s..rveys in -ecent months, representing a <br />varied mosaic of problems around the state. <br />In addition to our survey of home businesses, <br />we have recently completes surveys for <br />Babbitt -Embarrass, Wendell and Bovey, and are <br />working cooperatively with the <br />Knochiching-Itasca Action Council,, on a survey <br />to determine the needs o` individuals in that <br />area for food, shelter, housing, <br />transportation, employment, etc. <br />THE Babbitt -Embarrass survey revealed that <br />28% of the residents were unemployed. <br />Efforts to expand local businesses and <br />attract new ones are still being vigorously <br />pursue:; <br />MORE CONFUSION OVER THE MINNESOTA PROJECT <br />RECENT phone calls from grarL-hungry <br />businesses make us wish we had copyrighted <br />our name. Minnesota Project Innovation, a <br />public -private partnership created by Control <br />Data, Magnetic Controls, and the State of <br />Minnesota, recently aired radio spots asking, <br />small businesses seeking federal innovation <br />grants to call it. The newly forme <br />organization offers help to small businesses <br />in obtaining these grants, which are <br />primarily oriented to high technology <br />inventions for which federal support is <br />possible.
