Approved by the Orono Board of Education - July 11, 1988 <br />INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS <br />1. Develop good character, self-respect, a feeling of self worth, and self- <br />discipline. <br />2. Gain a sound education in the basic skills including reading, writing, <br />arithmetic, speaking and listening. <br />3. Gain the skills necessary for critical thinking, creative problem solving, <br />and the systematic inquiry and evaluation of information. <br />4. Gain a general education providing appreciation for and achievement in the <br />humanities, the sciences, the fine arts, and vocational studies. <br />5. Learn to be good citizens who appreciate, understand and practice democratic <br />ideals. <br />6. Learn to work in groups and to respect and resolve human differences. <br />7. Learn to meet the challenge of dealing effectively with one's own strengths <br />and weaknesses. <br />8. Develop skills necessary to use and to take advantage of modern technilogy. <br />9. Develop skills, attitudes, and understandings necessary for the management <br />of money, property, and resources. <br />10. Learn safety and good physical/mental health practices. <br />11. Learn about and understand the changes in the world and the global inter- <br />dependence among people and resources. <br />
