To prevent the premature extension of costly muni- <br /> cipal sewer and water services consistent with the adopted <br /> Comprehensive Land Use Plan of the city. <br /> SECTION 22 . 10 : DEFINITIONS <br /> Subdivision 1 : Rules . For the purposes of this code, <br /> the following words and terms shall have the meanings and <br /> interpretations set forth herein. The word "shall" is manda- <br /> tory and the words "should" and "may" are permissive. <br /> Subdivision 2 : Definitions. <br /> 1 . On-site Sewage Treatment System (hereinafter "sys- <br /> tem" or "on-site system" ) : A device or series of intercon- <br /> nected components designed , installed and maintained for the <br /> purpose of safely treating and disposing of sewage and domes- <br /> tic wastes , whenever such system is not part of a central <br /> sewer system. <br /> (a) Standard System: The standard system permitted by <br /> this code shall consist of a building drain and building sewer , <br /> two septic tanks, a distribution system, and a subsurface soil <br /> treatment and absorption area consisting of a series of gravity- <br /> fed drainfield trenches and an alternate area for future relo- <br /> cation of the drainfield. <br /> (b) Alternative Systems : Alternative systems permitted <br /> under controlled conditions by variance to this code include <br /> modified standard systems ; pressure-fed , shallow trench, seep- <br /> age bed , mound, aerobic , greywater ano osmosis systems ; toilet <br /> waste treatment devices ; and holding tanks. <br /> (c) Prohibited Systems : Systems hereby prohibited <br /> from being installed and/or used within the city include <br /> cesspools , seepage pits and privies. <br /> (d) Individual System: A system serving an individual <br /> building, typically a single family residence. <br /> (e ) Collector System: A system serving two or more <br /> buildings , typically including individual septic tanks con- <br /> nected to a cor;�mon soil treatment and absorption area. <br /> ( f) Commercial System: A system serving any non- <br /> residential building. <br /> -3- <br />
