Deadline Mav 13, 199H <br />Advanced Placement F.xamirationa <br />Seniors should note the availability of AP tests at <br />Orono High School. These tests are normally taken by <br />students who are completing an Advanced Placement <br />Course, but any student who feels he/she has sufficient <br />background could take one of thee* tests. AP courses <br />are college level in nature. These end of the year <br />examinations are used I,r placement and/or credit dur- <br />ing the freshman year in college. Tests will be given <br />over a two week period starting May 9 and ending May <br />20. Teats are normally available in the subject areas <br />of English, Spanish, German, and Calculus. Coat of <br />each exam is $53. See Mr. Wasbutten in the Guidance <br />Office for details. <br />PARENT MEET AND CONFER <br />wKAT: Parent Moot and Confer consists of parent rep- <br />resentatives from all buildirl;r., two Board mem- <br />ber• seal the Superintendent. We review parental <br />concerns and ideas, investigate the background <br />of the concerns and help find solutions. The <br />suggestions are made to the Board or appropriate <br />place. <br />WHY: The group was formed to give parents a place to <br />go with their Ideas and concerns when other <br />methods either do not work or were inappropriate <br />'The next meet ng is scheduled for April 18, at 7:00 p.m <br />In the District Office. Refreshments <br />will be on salo by the hand patents, headed by (:�rdon <br />sad Terri Nuhrer. <br />In the spring of 1.987 the school district earned i com- <br />petitive grant for a demonstration and exemplary program <br />entitled "Training Teachers of Science for Cluster Teach- <br />ing of Gifted Students." The grant is provided to the <br />Intermediate and middle schools. The training facili- <br />tatur 1s Karen Roger-. Minnesota's (perhaps the nation's) <br />foremost curriculum developer of gifted programs. The <br />grant has provided training, as well as time, to develop <br />and write special curricula. Orono now stands at the <br />forefront of cluster teaching for gifted/talented science <br />students. <br />Vern Linn, middle sch,-ol teacher, and a parr'cipent in <br />this program, has and will be making preatntations to <br />various interested groups regarding this program, as <br />follows: <br />To the Minnesota Science Teachers Association elemen- <br />tary teachers workshop on February 6. <br />To the Minnesota Council for the Gifted and Talented <br />on April 9. <br />_ 'to the Minnesota Science Teachers Association annual <br />spring conference on April 22-24. <br />Warren Nelson <br />. idle School Principal <br />HOST HOMFS yEEDED FOR AMITY AIDE <br />The high school Spanish department is looking for spun- <br />soring homes for the Amity: Aide for the 1988-89 school <br />Year. This is a Department of State approved program <br />designed to introduce young adults from .)that cuuntties <br />cages 21-28) to United States culture and education in <br />a supervised teaching experience. While improving their <br />k.ngllsh and teaching methods the Amity scholar teaches <br />the advanced placement group and leads conversation <br />groups of Spanish III and IC. They will visit <br />Worlds of run and participate in band competition with <br />bands from Minnesota to Texas, returning horn May 1. <br />
