Stoffey of Soil Testing Services of Minnesota
went to the above referenced site and performed 5 cone penetrometer tests in the
southeast corner of the excavation (see location sketch). Approximately 4 feet
of medium to coarse sand mixed with traces of fine to coarse gravel had been placed
in that area, The results of these tests are included in this report. The Con-
tractor, who placed the fill, used a vibratory roller with a 30-inch drum to
compact the s.-,d. Lifts were placed,at approximately 9-inch intervals.
The cone penetrometer is a penetration device used in granular soils. A
30-inch rod with a cone -shaped tip is driven into granular soils by dropping a
10-pound weight 30 inches and recording the number of blows required to penetrate
1 foot. The cone penetrometer has been calibrated in various soils with other
compaction -measuring devices.
For the type of soil used at this location, at least 30 blows for 12 inches
would indicate compaction to approximately 95% of the maximum Modified Proctor dry
density (ASTM D-1557-70).
