Buckthorn and Invasive <br />Exotic Plant Species <br />Residents were asked: <br />How serious of a problem in Orono is buckthorn andl <br />or other invasive exotic plant species -- very serious, <br />somewhat serious, not too serious, or not at all serious? <br />Eighty-seven percent view invasive exotic plant species as a "serious problem:" <br />VERY SERIOUS ................................... 42% <br />SOMEWHAT SERIOUS ............................. 45% <br />NOT TOO SERIOUS ................................. 7% <br />NOT AT ALL SERIOUS .............................. 3% <br />DON'T KNOW/REFUSED ............................ 3% <br />In fact, a compelling 42% see it as a "very serious problem:" <br />"Serious" is posted at a higher rate by: <br />• those rating the quality of life as excellent <br />• those with a private well <br />• those not contacting City Hall <br />• Precinct Four residents <br />"Not serious" is indicated more often by: <br />• residents for less than ten years <br />• those connected to city water <br />• those contacting City Hall <br />• owners of residences on less than one acre <br />• those living on the lake <br />• Precinct Two residents <br />Summary and <br />Conclusions <br />Ninety-three percent think it is at least "somewhat important" for the City of Orono to be a leader <br />in Lake Minnetonka environmental causes; in fact, forty-six percent think it is "very important." <br />Residents identify three very serious environmental concerns facing Orono: "preserving open <br />space," cited by 72%; "quality of water in lakes and streams," by 63%; and, "protection of <br />natural areas, such as wetlands and forests," indicated by 61%. Specifically, a 55%-38% <br />majority favor requiring property owners on the lakeshore to maintain a natural area buffer zone <br />on the water's edge and restricting property owners from mowing in that buffer. <br />65 <br />
