Gaffron, Asst Planning 6 Zoning Administrator <br />December 29# 1988 <br />Pillars# Entry Monuments and Gateways <br />Per Council's dire^.^on in November# we have reviewed the currently <br />existing codes pertaining to entryway pillars# monuments and gateways. <br />There are three general cases where such structures are occasionally <br />requested# namely: <br />1. At the entrance to a public street - new or old subdivision. <br />2. At the entrance to a private road - new or old subdivision. <br />3. At a private driveway entrance serving 1-3 persons. <br />Related to these three general cases are four general items that often <br />become a concern. These are: <br />1. <br />2. <br />3. <br />4. <br />Pillars and monuments. <br />Gates. <br />Signage. <br />Lighting. <br />The code sections dealing with fences a'^d walls are: <br />Section 1C.03, Subdivision 15 (O# the "non-encroachment" section# <br />which generally states that "fences . . . are allowed up to 3*j* high <br />in any yard • . . and up to 6* high on lakeshore lots along major <br />thoroughfares." (This is further restricted by Section 10.22# <br />Subdivision 1 which generally would disallow any structure within 75* <br />of the lake.) <br />Section 10.03# Subdivision IS (D) allows "fences and walls. . .up to a <br />height of 6* above original grade. . . but no fence or wall higher <br />than 42" can encroach lakeward from the average lakeshore setback*# <br />and also again states that fences cannot be constructed within the 75* <br />lakeshore setback. <br />Section 10.03# Subdivision 15 (B) generally •ares that accessory <br />structures can be located as close as 5* to a rear lot line# but that <br />fences and walls may not exceed 6* in height in a rear yard. <br />Section 10.03# Subdiv ision 15 (F) states that a 10' setback is <br />*«qulred for a 1 i acceiTsory sFructures In a side yard and no fence or <br />all constructed within a side yard may exceed in height.
