The
additional development of the well was successful as the desired capacity was achieved.
However, the pump will draw some sand each time it starts. The difficult well construction
and time for additional development pushed pumphouse construction into cold weather
conditions. The contractor has requested compensation for cold weather construction.
The well was originally to be completed in June. However, due to nature of the geological
transition zone, removal of material to construct the well ca\ity was extremely slow. The
well contractor requested additional compensation and waiver of liquidated damages. Only
waiver of liquidated damages was allowed and testing of the w-ell was completed late August.
Well testing showed that the sandroex formation wus unstable at the desired pumping
capacity of 500 gpm. Additional development and testing was undertaken and completed
late October. The well pumps sand free at 600 gpm when operated continuously, but pumps
d little sand each time it starts. Presently the well is operated from pressure in a
hydropneumauc tank and will stan several times a day. After the proposed elevated tank
is constructed, the number of stans will be minimized. Two options were investigated to
minimize the effect of sand accumulation in the system.
1. Rnlarye the well cavitv; More sandrock could be removed to enlarge the cavity
similar to that recently completed. As the pump only pulls sand for a short time
when started, spending another S30,000 at this time is probably not justified. The city
may desire to increase the well capacity in the future and monies could be budgeted
for that purpose.
