Senator James <br />Meizeo (DFL-South SL Paul) will proba ­ <br />bly be one of the bill’s authors. <br />Under tbe bill, sute statutes would su­ <br />persede any nile or ordinance of a local <br />unit of govemmeot relating to regula ­ <br />tion of tbe location of vet.diog macbine <br />sales of tobacco. <br />Tbe bill’s regulatioos are similar to tbe <br />partial ban t>-pc of ordinances several <br />communities have pa-sed. Tbe bill would <br />allow vendiog macbi .. sales of tobacco <br />products: <br />• In a factor)', business, office, or other <br />place not open to tbe general public or <br />minors (18 years of age); or <br />• In an on-sale or off-sale liquor store or <br />bar if ibe macbine is under tbe close <br />observation and control of a responsible <br />employee, not in an outer waiting area or <br />other unmonitored area, and if the ma­ <br />cbine is inaccessible after hours. The bill <br />would require that in non-factory or bar <br />locations, the machine must work only <br />by an employee activating an electronic <br />switch or by using a token. <br />Tbe bill will be up for a bearing shortly. <br />It rootrasts with a bill by Sen. Marty <br />(DFL-Roseville) which would require <br />local UccnsuTR of cigarette vending <br />machines.
