THE ORONO PARK COMMISSION MEETING HELD ONAUGUST 6, 1991
ORONO SEWER POND PROPERTY cont.
Mr. Shardiow acai:i noted the schematic lay
analysis ..nd features on land v;it.h limitations.
w4 la »w . I liS • vA ▲. * w ^
Bradley ashed if soil boring results could cc ir.corpcratac.
within report as a loch or feasibility for develop.ment.
Chairman Flint asked about tying in the bike/hike trail.
Vongries questioned why this would be considered when the
trail can go through the park that already exits in the area.
Wilson noted that the trail around the lake should be very
low-keyed, not a highly used bike trail v;hich would tend to deter
wildlife in the area.
Chairman Flint noted that the current proposal for the
bike/hike trail is a S' wide, bituminous trail going two way.
Mr. Peterson felt that the Commission should look to the
City's Comprehensive Management Plan for direction on hov; to
dnvelop the property, as the CMP indicates what Orono as a whole
wants.
Wilson expressed her desire to set aside as much land as
possible, and to put little if anything there to protect the
wildlife in the area.
Vongries stated his opinion as there is a park very close to
this property and also land which the County owns which could be
utilized better for park area. He feels the property should
perhaps be developed as residential. By setting the ..and as- e,
the City is basically expending money, perhaps not on the type of
park Orono residents wish to see. He also felt that other City
p^]^ks were underutilised and not appreciated much by the
residents so why set a.'“'de more land and take off the tax roles.
He felt that perhaps the County should be c.hallenged to do
something with the property directly across from Noerenberg Park.
Bradley felt that a study should be done. He also felt the
possibility exists to detour the bike/hike trail through the
property. He felt that with pending subdivisions in the area,
there is less land available for habitat.
Kokal noted he felt unprepared at this point to make a
determination. He felt that there is plenty of land for
wildlife, and was not sure of the buildability of the property,
the water quality. He likes the concept of walk areas and some
homes developed.
