u <br />h <br />t <br />r <br />Don Anderson and John Maresh briefly reported to the Board on the NS8A <br />Convention which they attended April 13 - 16, 1991 in San Francisco* California. <br />Don Anderson reported that class size, middle school student participation and <br />varsity athletics were topics of discussion at the Teacher Meet and Confer <br />meeting held on April 10, 1991. <br />t.ucle Taylor reported that the Technology Committee has developed a rough draft <br />of current needs and guidelines for the future and is now beginning to <br />review/study financing and should have a presentation ready for the Board at the <br />Jur.« ’••eting. <br />UPON MOTION by Don Anderson, seconded by Lucie Taylor, the Board of Education <br />approved the Policy Series 3000 and 4000 and the accompanying procedures for the <br />Orono School District. <br />Or. Mich responded to questions from the Board for clarification purposes <br />reiterating that, once the policy book is complete, a systematic review system <br />will be developed that will take place on an annual basis. <br />Motion carried. <br />Or. Mich updated the Board on the latest information from the current legisla <br />tive session and Board discussion ensued regarding concerns/frustrations with <br />the current legislation and the impact it would have on the School District. <br />Or. Mich complimented the Board for all of the time/effort they have put forth <br />In trying to impact the legislature and stated that, by the next meeting, hope <br />fully there will be a more clear view of the direction of the legislature. <br />Or. Mich presented to the Board a draft proposal for a long-range planning pro <br />cess which would assist the District in continuing its posture of responsible <br />effectiveness for the next three to five years. He stated that, in August, mem <br />bers of the Board of Education will identify a series of topics for con <br />sideration, task forces and the steering committee would be established and <br />begin their work In the fall of the school year with a target date for a final <br />report to the Board sometime in March, 1992. <br />Or. Mich presented to tne Board the policies and procedures for Series 5000 <br />(Student Tavsonnel) and S<>ries 6000 (Instructional Program) as a first reading <br />and he responded to questions from the Board. Approval of series 5000 and 6000 <br />will take place at the May 13 meeting. <br />Or. Mich presented the Mission Statement and Instructional Goals, as a first <br />reading, which must be reviewed on sn annual basis by the Board of Education to <br />fulfill the quirement of the planning, evaluating and reporting legislation. <br />The consensu*. - the Boird was that a work session should follow the May 13 <br />^ard meef* >n order to review/revise the instructional goals. <br />Mr. Ron Gilbert reported to the Board on the Minnesota Auiumated Reported <br />Student System (MARSS), a system which is being mandated by the State to begin <br />In 1991*92. Mr. Gilbert stated that this system will be run in conjunction with <br />TIES and provides for the automated collection of student information and evcn-
