1998 Marina Licenses
August 7,1998
Page 3
No activities occurring at the site require a conditional use permit. Applicants are currently
in compliance with the seven operational standards and the conditions of approval of the
recent renovation approval resolution #3835.
Staff has discussed with the site manager the issue of storage of miscellaneous dock parts
next to the parking lot along Co. Rd. 15, and we have agreed he will enclose a relatively
small area with a 3-1/2' fence to screen, define and enclose this necessary storage. We have
also discussed the need to limit storage of boats for sale to the designated area next to the
building rather than in the lakeshore yard along the length of the parking lot.
Staff recommends approval of a 1998 marina license for Genmar/King ’s Cove.
C. Sailor's World
Sailor ’s World operates a ship's store, boat club (CUP issued 1995), and rents slips, with a
current dock capacity of 79 boats. Temporary side setback variances granted by LMCD in
1987 for 10 of the 79 slips, were due to expire after the 1997 season, and these 10 slips in the
100-200' zone would have had to be removed per LMCD order. However, in April 1998
LMCD granted Sailor ’s World a new license with variances and allowed the 10 slips to
remain.
This marina was reconstructed in the early 1990's, and the only outstanding work remaining
to be done is landscaping. The landscaping work has been delayed for the past 4 ye^ due
to the potential need to excavate on the site for investigation of petroleum contamination
from the former service station across County Road 15. It is staffs understanding that the
contamination issue has been resolved, hence staff will be working with the owner to finalize
the landscape work as soon as possible.
Activities occurring on this site which require ongoing attention by the property owner in
order to remain in compliance with the seven operation standards include; managing parking
facilities, including the use of the Minnetonka Art Center for overflow parking to avoid
parking and trafTic problems, keeping the storage of boats and other items out of the
designated landscape areas, and keeping the site neat and orderly. It appears that a third
access point maybe establishing itself alon the southerly side of the storage building, and this
will need to be eliminated as part of the landscaping completion.
Staff recommends approval of a 1998 marina license for Sailors World.
