GEORGE H. DIXON
January 2, 1998 m 5 19^
City cf Orono
Attention: Gregory A. Gappa
Director of Public Services
Box 66
Crystal Bay, MN 55323-0066
Dear Mr. Gappa;
This is about the planned reconstruction of North Ferndale Road from T.H.12 Bridge to
County Hwy. 6. I am unable to attend the public hearing on January 12.
As nearly as I can tell the prime concern of residents in the project area (including my wife
and niyselO is speed control of local auto traffic, both now and when the project is
completed. So for what it is worth -
1. Police surveillance of any street or highway is sporadic and therefore not consistently
effective. Nor are speed limit sign postings.
2. To achieve consistently effective speed control (say to 35mph) more is needed. Dips,
bumps, curves and other devices can be effective and should be considered. Some should
be tried, even if expenmentelly.
3. A standard objection to these devices is that some create obstacles to snowplows,
street cleaners etc. Yet it's my understanding that in Europe, which certainly has snow
and plows and street cleaners they have been used for years. So it would seem we can do
it too.
4. I have a home in another community where an important street has a number of speed
bumps. Each is about 6 feet across (front to back) and about 4 inches high at the center.
Do they slow traffic? Yes Could a plow or street cleaner get across them comfortably? .
Yes.
121 W^hlngton Avenu* South, No. 617 MinneapoSs, Minnesota 55401 612/339*2720
