2024 Hennepin County All -Jurisdiction Hazard Mitigation Plan <br />Volume 2 — Hazard Inventory <br />community and estimate the potential losses. This CFI considers all hazards that were identified in the <br />Risk Assessment. <br />1.1.3. Justification of Hazard Inclusion <br />TABLE 1.3A provides the types of natural hazards that have been identified through analysis and <br />assessment. <br />TABLE 1.3A. Natural Hazards Bla <br />N tura <br />ype <br />Jusfiif ca i fi r lnciiu"sllc <br />Hfzd,,, <br />Geological <br />Landslide <br />Countywide vulnerable area, especially where <br />steep slopes are located, and heavy saturation <br />occurs. <br />Sink Hole <br />History of occurrences, poses danger to <br />population and property <br />Soil Frost <br />History of occurrences that have caused <br />infrastructure damage <br />Volcanic Ash <br />Historic volcanic eruptions (western states) have <br />spread ash into Hennepin County. Future <br />occurrences may also impact the county <br />Meteorological <br />Climate Change <br />There has been climate research done at the <br />international level through the Intergovernmental <br />Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and local through <br />the Minnesota State Climatology Office. <br />Tornado <br />Hennepin County has a strong history of <br />tornadoes dating back to 1820. This hazard is a <br />consistent threat to both life safety and property <br />Winds, Extreme Straight -Line <br />Hennepin County has a strong history of derecho's <br />dating back to 1904. The Storm Prediction Center <br />(SPC) also highlights Minnesota as being highly <br />impacted by derecho activity during the summer <br />months. <br />Hail <br />Hailstorms occur during severe convective storms <br />and are an annual occurrence in Hennepin County. <br />Very large hail has been recorded back as far as <br />the National Weather Service has compiled data <br />(1950). These storms pose a significant threat to <br />people and infrastructure. <br />Lightning <br />Lightning is a regular occurrence and is associated <br />with thunderstorm activity. Hennepin County has <br />a history of lightning deaths as well as damage to <br />property and infrastructure <br />Rainfall, Extreme <br />Hennepin County has had a history of extreme <br />rainfall events, and the occurrences are becoming <br />much more frequent.
