Historical Data Bld <br />Lightning is a usual occurrence in thunderstorms across the State and Hennepin County each year. Every <br />year, about four percent of Minnesota structural fires are caused by natural events, one can infer these <br />natural events to be lightning related. The National Climatic Data Center states that there have been <br />$700,000 dollars in damage and 6 injuries due to lightning strikes in Hennepin County since August of <br />1995. From 1959-2014, Minnesota has had 64 lightning fatalities in the state. <br />Historically, data shows us that leisure -related activities are the greatest source of lightning fatalities. <br />From a study that looked at lightning deaths from 2006 through 2013, fishing contributed to the most <br />lightning deaths with 11% of all deaths. <br />See GRAPHIC 4.3.5D for the top 11 activities that contributed most the lightning deaths during this period. <br />This is consistent with a study that was published in 1999 that looked at lightning casualties and damages <br />from 1959 to 1994 in the United States. <br />There have been are no other lightning related incidents that are within the scope of this plan. <br />113 <br />
