(a) Required Construction. Every building hereafter con­ <br />structed shall be accessible to Tire department apparatus by way of access road­ <br />ways with all-^^’cathcr driving surface of not less than 20 feet of unobstructed <br />width, with adequate roadway turning radius capable of supporting the imposed <br />loads of fire apparatus and having a minimum of 13 feet 6 inches of vertical <br />clearance. Dead-end Fire department ac'^tss roads in excess of ISO feet long shall <br />be provided with approved provisions r the turning aiound of fire department <br />apparatus. <br />EXCEPTION: When there arc not more than two Group R, Division 3 or M <br />Occupancies as denned in the Building Code, the requirement of this section may be <br />modified when, in the opinion of the chief, fiie-fighting or rescue operations would <br />not be impaired. <br />(b) Obstructing. The required width of access roadM«iys shall not be <br />obstructed in any manner, including parking of vehicles. NO PARKING signs or <br />other appropriate noticc.or both,prohibiting obstructions may be required and <br />shall be maintained. <br />(c) Extent. The access roadway shall be extended to within 150 feet of all <br />portions of the exterior walls of the first story of any building. Where the access <br />roadway cannot be provided, approved fire protection system or systems shall be <br />provided as required and approved by the chief. <br />(d) Firc-protectioii Alternate. Wlicrc firc-proicciion systems approved by the <br />chief are provided, the above required clearance may be modified. <br />(c) Ovtrsizing. The chief shall have the authority fo require an increase in the <br />minimum access widths where such width is not adequate for fire or rescue <br />operations. <br />(0 Bridges. Where a bridge is required to be used as access under this section, <br />it shall be constructed and maintained n accordance with the applicable sections <br />of the Building Code and using design live loading suff'^i*- to carry the imposed <br />loads of the fire apparatus. cid. <br />Prernises Identificotlon <br />See. 10.208. T1ic chief shall designate the type and number <br />of fire appliances (0 be installed and maintained in and upon all buildings and <br />premises in the jurisdiction other than private dwellings, lliis shall be done <br />according to the relative severity of probable fire, including the rapidity with <br />which it may spread. Such appliances shall be of a type suitable for the probable <br />class of fire associated with such building or premises and shall have approval of <br />the chief <br />Porlabiv. fire extinguishers shall be in accordance with U.F.C. Standard No. <br />10-1. <br />(b) Special Hazards. In occupancies of an especially haz:« ous nature or <br />wheru special hazards exist in addition %o the normal hazard of the ccupancy, or <br />where access for fire apparatus is unduly difficult, additional s .guards may be <br />required consisting of additional fire appliance units, more than one type of <br />appliance, or S{)ccial systems suitable for the protection of the hazard involved. <br />Such devices or appliances may consist of automatic fire alarm systems, automat­ <br />ic sprinkler or wa?cr spray systems, standpipe and hose, fixed or portable fire <br />extinguishers, suiiable asbestos blankets, breathing apparatus, manual or auto­ <br />matic covers, carbon dioxide, foam, halogenatcd and dry chemical or other <br />special fire-extinguishing systems. Where such systems aire installed, they shall <br />be in accordance with the applicable Uniform Fire Code Standards or standards of <br />the N.iiional Fire Protection Association when Unifomi rirc Code Standards do <br />not apply. <br />(c) Water Sup|)Iy.\An approVi*d‘water su capable of supplying required • <br />fire flow for fire protection shall be provided to all premises upon which buildings* <br />or portions of buildings arc hereafter constructed; Wlicn any portion of the <br />building protected is in excess of 150 feel from a water supply on a public street, <br />ihtr^f shall be provided, when required by the chief, on-site fire hydrants and <br />mains capable of supplying the required fire flow. <br />Watc' supply may consist of rcsei>c.:s, pressure tanks, elevated tanks, water <br />mains or ether fixed system capable of supplying the required fire flow.
