> #
-#
The Postmaster in Minneapolis has indicated that regardless of
which post office is selected, the city can use "Orono” in its
mailing address. This will generally not affect mail delivery
since the mail sorting* machines sort by zip code. If the machine
for some reason cannot read the zip code the machine reads the
city. When it reads the city, it sends the mail to the lowest
zip code serving the city. The lowest zip code serving Orono is
the Crystal Bay Post Office. If the city selected the Long Lake
Post Office a small percent of the city's mail could be delivered
to the Crystal Bay Post Office.
The analysis of the two alternatives points to the Long Lake Post
Office as the preferred alternative from an operational
standpoint. The additional factor in the decision process is the
concern for the future viability of the Crystal Bay Post Office.
Staff has been working with the Postal Service to develop a five
year lease based on providing improvements to the post office
parking area. Staff has not had discussions with the Postal
Service rega*'ding plans beyond the fi re year period.
