For more information about Council items, call 291-6359. <br />Metropolitan Council <br />M&fopoiUm <br />CouncU <br />Governor Appoints Eight Members to <br />Metropolitan Council--On December 30. <br />Governor Arne Carlson announced the <br />appointment of eight members to the Council, all <br />to serve four-year terms. <br />Polly Peterson Bowles, 33. of Edina, continues to <br />represent District 11. She is an a.s.sociate attorney <br />with Facgrc & Bensen and a recipient of the <br />Minneapolis Distinguished Scrsice Award. <br />Martha M. Head, 47, of Minneapolis, wll repr«ent <br />District 5. She is president of the Calhoun Square <br />shopping mall in Minneapolis, vice president of <br />Nationwide Housing Corporation, and a member <br />of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the <br />American Association of University Women. <br />Kevin Howe. 58. Mendota Heights, will represent <br />District 15. A vice president of IDS Financial <br />Services, he was an assistant attorney general from <br />1967 to 1970. <br />Patrick C. Leung, 41, New Brighton, will represent <br />District 3. An aiiorncy in immigration law, he <br />came here from Hong Kong in 1973. He co <br />founded and direcu the state chapter of the <br />National Asi.-in-Pacific American Bar A.ssiKiation <br />and serves on the Metropolitan Transit <br />Commission's Minority Qimmunily Advisory <br />Committee. <br />Esther Newcomt. 62, 3^*hile Bear Lake, amtinues <br />to represent District 7. An employee of Ocean Air <br />Travel, she serses on the Health East Foundation <br />Grants Review Commitiee-St. Joseph's Hospital <br />Aiudliaiy and the East Metro Womet’s <br />Association. <br />Roger Scherer, 57, Plymouth, will represent District <br />9. President of Scherer Lumber Company in <br />Minneapolis, he served on The Coui.cil from 1981 <br />to 1985 and served in the state legislature from <br />1966 to 1972. He is past chairman of the <br />Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce and now <br />serves on the Plymouth Planning Commission. <br />Mary H. Smith, 49, Orono, will repr>sent District <br />13. She serves on the Minnesota Medical <br />Association Auxiliary, the Hennepin Technical <br />College Board and the Metropolitan State <br />University Alumni Board. She resigned her school <br />board seat on Distuct 284 to be on the CounciL <br />Stephen B. Wellington, 43, St. Paul, will represent <br />District 1. He runs a construction Arm and served <br />as a representative to the legislature for St. Paul <br />under former Mayor George Latimer. He is a <br />member of the Citizens League, the Neighborhood <br />Economic Development Alliance and the Housing <br />Alternatives Development Corporation. <br />The Council took the following actions in <br />December: <br />Local Planning—The Council agreed that <br />before the pr^^ posed amendment for the Blaine <br />Comprehensi r plan can take effect the city must: <br />remi»i.e the proposed expansion of the. <br />Metropolitan Urban Service Area (MUSA); revise <br />wastewater flow projections; and remove references <br />to a Light Rail Transit corridor.
