Chuck Siggerud
Metro District Engineer
MnDOT
June 10, 1993
page 2
with permanent construction. MnDCT first took this position in
Noven±ier of 1991 when the project was planned for 1993. The
project has now been delayed by two years. This temporary solution
needs to be revisited to clarify the actual amount of the project
that would have to be replaced by the permanent construction, and
to clarify the actual timing of the safety improvement project. If
there is uncertainty remaining about whether the safety
improvements will be constructed even in 1995 we need to look much
more closely at installing the temporary signal and channelitation
lanes.
While the safety improvement project and temporary signal
project are being reviewed, the cities are left with a dangerous
high traffic intersection. A near term interim solution needs to
be identified as soon as possible. One suggestion made by a
resident whose family has experienced several accidents at that
intersection is to restrict left turns during the morning and
evening rush hour periods. Left turns are a cause of “ portion of
the accidents at the intersection. Please review this option in
terms of its feasibility and effectiveness from a traffic movement
and traffic safety standpoint.
The real solution to these safety problems is to move up the
safety imcrovement project to a fixec date. Now that Che
Lecislative session is completed and the biennial budget has bee
adopted MnDOT should be able to firm up the schedule for these
types of projects.
Please provide a response to the following items at your
earliest convenience:
1.
2 .
ety i.morovement project has
tion of why the project can
1995 .
ng and p ation of the
pro]ects' with which the safety improvement
cotnoetinc.
18
3.
