Item No.: 14 Date: January 8, 2024 <br />Presenter: James Van Eyll <br />Presenter: Fire Chief <br />Section:Public Safety Report <br /> <br /> <br />Title: Authorization to Hire Part-Time Firefighters <br /> <br />1.Purpose: <br />The purpose of this action item is to gain approval to hire Part Time Firefighter for Weekday <br />Daytime Duty Crew. <br />2.Background: <br />The Orono Fire Department is currently seeking part time firefighters for our weekday daytime <br />duty crew to cover our Station 2 call area. <br /> <br />The selection process for the position involved advertising the position, application screening, and <br />an interview. The interview was conducted by the Fire Chief and other city employees. The <br />applicant must successfully complete a Psychological Exam, a Physical (Pre-employment medical) <br />exam and a probationary period. All applicants will have to pass a background check performed <br />by the Orono Police Department. <br />3.Recommended Candidate: <br />John Jackson, Jason Huber and Tom Flermoen are experienced firefighters with other <br />departments. Tom Flermoen has 9-years’ experience and is Firefighter I and II along with EMT. <br />Jason Huber has 5-years’ experience and is Firefighter I and II along with EMT. John Jackson has <br />5-years’ experience and is Firefighter I and II along with EMR. <br />They all are excited to become charter members of the Orono Fire Department and look forward to <br />creating the best department. <br />4.Recommended Compensation: <br />I recommend John Jackson, Jason Huber and Tom Flermoen conditional job offers as part time <br />firefighters with an effective start date of January 9, 2024 for firefighter training and other such <br />duties will be beginning on January 9, 2024 <br />a. Pay. Starting rate of $20.00/hour. <br />b. Benefits: Police and Fire PERA <br />c.
