Archhectunil Objectives
The new Orono Ice Arena will become the new gathering place for all skating
enthusiasts in the Orono community. It is to become a forum for teaching,
learning, competing, and watching the sports of hockey and figure skating, as
well as a facility for socializing and recreational skating. This facility has the
potential to become an integral part of the community; one which welcomes
and accommodates a variety of groups and activities.
The building can be seasonally flexible, accommodatiog all ice sports in the
skating season and various community and sports activities during the off
season. Multiple uses could include: high school graduatioo, flea markets,
civic meetings, and athletic activities such as tennis, indoor baseball, soccer,
rollerblading, and others.
The building program contains a generous lobby and large flexible meeting
room for hockey association and community group usage.
Architecturally, the aesthetic and functional success of the building is linked
to the market success of the rink. Our design objective is to create a "user-
firiendly" building so people can feel equally corafortoble whether they are
playing hockey, figure skating, skating recreationally, or watching their son
or daughter score a goal. More specifically, the building should be sympa
thetic to its site and users through the use of appropriate scale, massing, mate
rials, and detail. The master plan can incorporate a phased approach which
would construct the building shell with a fiilly fimctioning ice rink first and
then completing remaining portions as funds become available.
The result from the exterior will be a handsome building which will be sym
pathetic to iu rural context and mark the comer at Old Crystal Bay Road and
County Road 6. The interior will provide a welcome environment for all
skaters and spectators that will make this rink a popular amenity to your com
munity.
-
Orono Ice Arena
