Background information was then
given about the camp, which was purchased from the Boyscouts in
the eairly 1960's. Temple Israel has used the facility mostly
as a day camp during the summer with a very small resident pro
gram at the same time. Since the early 1970’s there have also
been retreats during some of the weekends over the school year.
Camp Teko is an important part, of the educational syste'- ‘=«t Tem
ple Israel and all programs are under the guidance of professional
staff. Only one building on the grounds has plumbing and wash
facilities, and no new sleeping areas have been added since the
camp was purchased from the Scouts.
Plans for a new building were reviewed. The building is intended
to make using the camp in the same way it is now used more com
fortable and more effective. The building would include new
sleeping areas, new bathrooms, and additional program space.
This would allow for more indoor area in the summer in the event
of rain, as well as bathrooms in the same place where people are
sleeping on weekends in the winter months. All of the architect's
drawings/sketches were reviewed, and questions about the building
were answered. There did not seem to be any serious concerns
on the part of Camp Teko neighbors about the new building itself.
It was also noted that the use of the camp is not expected to
change appreciably/with the new building.
Those who attended the meeting seemed to appreciate having been
invited. Many had never been to the facility before. Most of
the people there were not even aware of the weekend retreat pro
gram during the school year. Several people said they had walked
by or through the camp on many occassions and had never seen
anyone there. There were several comments about how nice the
sounds of the children can be during the summer.
One individual did comment that on several occassions they felt
there was excessive noise at the camp. This was the first time
representatives of the committtee had heard this concern voiced.
All present were encouraged to contact the camp directly if there
were further problems. The facility caretakers live at the camp
all year long and they were introduced as the persons to contact.
N«ighb6i;s<itwepe*.eric<fcuragad}tto>xall Temple Israel directly if prob
lems persist. It was also noted that staff leaders for both the
summer and winter programs would be informed of these comments.
1 414
-v;.-
li
^ • 'L
=•: :
S'
^ • py;.:
■••■■•■A
:.y:r:m
• ’.1 ■
' :.'f .'vvdi, ■ ,v,
.A...
