Purpose. The purpose of this agenda item is to gain council approval of a resolution to declare that <br />the position of a part-time fire fighter qualifies for membership in the Police and Fire Plan of the Public <br />Employees Retirement Association (PERA). <br />2. Background. The Orono Fire Department is in the process of hiring part-time firefighters for <br />weekday duty crews. As part of the hiring action, the part-time firefighters are to be part of the Police and <br />Fire Plan of PERA. Enrollment in PERA requires that the city pass a resolution declaring that the position <br />is qualified to participate in PERA. Tonight's action is required to allow the newly hired employees to <br />participate in PERA. <br />3. Staff Recommendation. Staff recommends approval of the to declare that the position of part-time <br />firefighter is primarily responsible for firefighting and qualifies for membership in the Police and Fire <br />Plan of PERA. <br />COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED <br />Adoption of resolution 7419, a resolution to declare that the position of part-time firefighter is primarily <br />responsible for firefighting and qualifies for membership in the Police and Fire Plan of the Public <br />Employees Retirement Association. <br />Exhibits <br />A.
