Driving problems and traffic concerns are among the most common complaints <br />received by the Orono Police Department. The Orono Police Department believes that <br />participation in the Toward Zero Deaths (TZD) Enforcement Program will provide increased <br />traffic enforcement and safety awareness. TZD is a state program funded through grant money <br />obtained by the MN Department of Public Safety. Participation in the program is expected to <br />reduce the number of alcohol related traffic accidents, increase the use of seat belts and decrease <br />distracted driving. <br />2.Partnership. Orono Police Department partner with Medina, Minnetrista, West Hennepin <br />Department of Public Safety, Rogers, South Lake, Dayton, Deephaven and Corcoran Police <br />Departments in implementing the TZD Program from October 2023 through September 2024. <br />This will be our tenth year working with these departments. <br />3.Lead Agency. Orono Police Department will be the lead agency for the application and <br />implementation of this grant and will be responsible for collection of invoices and the <br />distribution/ reimbursement of funds to the other departments involved with this grant. <br />4.Staff Recommendation. I recommend Orono continue it participation in the TZD program, our <br />partnership with our neighboring agencies and our continuation as the contract lead for the 2023-24 fiscal <br />period. <br />COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED <br />1).
