REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
. %
DATE: May 18, 1^95-
ITEM NO: / ^
Department Approval:
Name Ron Moorse
Title Citv Administrator
Administrator Reviewed:Agenda Section:
City Administrator's
Report
Item Description:
Highway 12 Bike Trail
At its May 10 meeting, the Council approved the construction of an eight foot wide bike trail
S3.“ r "t »S"
has followed up on this project with Mn/DOT it has l^n determined that there is not sufficient
right-of-way available to provide for an eight foot wide pathway.
The rieht-of-way can accommodate only a four foot wide walkway. This is substantially less
than an ideal width especially for bicyclists. This is somewhat offset by the fact that mere wiU
be a four-foot sidewalk on both the north and south sides of Highway 12. Although is not
ideal a four-foot sidewalk does provide an additional level of safety for those who wa^ or bike
along Highway 12. This type of pedestrian traffic doe-- occur between Long Lake and the Orono
Schools campus.
The section of Highway 12 west of Willow, which will be a rural section, will have an eight to
ten foot paved shoulder. The urban section between North Brown Road and Willow Dnve, will
not have a shoulder. The sidewalk is needed to provide a safer facility for pedestnans and
bicyclists.
Staff Recommendation
Because it is unknown at this time when development may occur along Highway 12 to erwbie
the construction of a full width pathway, adjacent to the placed frontage road, it is
recommended that the four foot sidewalk be installed as an interim safety measure for tn
pedestrian traffic along Highway 12.
COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED:
Motion to approve the four foot sidewalk on the north side of Highway 12 from North Brown
Road to Willow Drive.
