Mr. Edward J Callahan, Jr
Mayor of Orono
Municipal Offices
Post Office Box 66
Crystal Bay, MN 55323
4/26/95
Dear Mr. Mayor,
I was in attendance at the Public Hearing on Monday night and did not have the
opportunity to speak, nor was the atmosphere friendly to supporters of the road closure
I am a resident of Shorewood and have driven Rt 19 and Rt. 15 for the last seven years
I want to go on record that I am very much in favor of the closure of Old Beach Road and
the left turn arrow at the intersection of Rts. 19 and 15 I cannot understand any Tonka
Bay or Orono resident preferring to make two unprotected left turns across traffic and
drive down narrow Old Beach Road versus the alternative of making one protected left
turn at the light. The turn from Old Beach Road to Rt. 19 is particularly difficult and
dangerous due to the very poor visibility and rate of speed of oncoming cars from two
directions
Since the left turn arrow has been in place, I have not had one problem making a
left turn from Rt. 15 to Rt. 19 The small time difference is certainly outweighed by my
peace of mind While driving down Old Beach Road prior to its’ closing, I have been
passed while observing the speed limit and have seen the heavy volume of traffic backed
up at either end both in the morning and at night.
Not all residents of Tonka Bay and Shorewood agree with the position taken by
the self appointed petition spokesperson. For everybody’s safety and welfare, I hope that
you and the Council will vote to permanently close Old Beach Road and to maintain the
left turn arrow at the intersection. It is the right thing to do.
Sincerely,
Rick Bums
26170 Birch Bluff Road
Shorewood, MN 55331
cc: J. Diann Goetten
Jo Ellen Hurr
Gabriel Jabbour
Charles Kelley
11998
C':
