approved the Activity Fund quarterly report - first <br />quarter, 1996-97 school year; <br />approved the Treasurer's report for June, 1996 and July, <br />1996; <br />- approved the bills as covered by vouchers 094451 through <br />094900. <br />Motion carried. Board member Maresh absent. <br />Chairperson Van de Ven stated that, with the consensus of the <br />Board, following the Superintendent's Report the recognition of <br />National Merit scholars and newly tenured teachers would take <br />place. <br />Dr. Mich reported that Dr. Ernie Stachowski conducted sessions on <br />classroom management and critical thinking last week; that on <br />October 21 a professional day will be held with curriculum areas <br />meeting by discipline; that he was distributing the Annual Report <br />which the Board approved at its September 23 meeting; that the <br />District had received an excellent report from the State fire <br />marshall owing to the good work of the staff but that he wanted the <br />Board to keep in mind that sprinkler systems in the high school and <br />primary school are needed; that on October 28, Neal Lawson will <br />attend the Orono City Council meeting as the ice arena should <br />receive final approval and that Mr. Lawson will serve on the Orono <br />Ice Arena board as the District's representative; that on October <br />25, Kevin Armstrong will conduct the Advanced Elements of <br />Instruction for his peers and Board members are invited to attend. <br />Dj-, Mich expressed appreciation to all of those in attendance at <br />this meeting to honor the achievements of students and teachers who <br />are involved in the business of learning and teaching. He called <br />on Dr. Carl Shutts, Orono High School Principal, who introduced the <br />following students and their parents and presented each student <br />with a certificate for their achievement in the National Merit <br />Program: Adrienne Richardson, Lisa Zeeb, Albert Boston, William <br />Nicoll, Vivian Takach, Thomas White. <br />Following the recognition of students, a Tenure Ceremony was held <br />at which principals/supervisors introduced/acknowledted each newly <br />tenured teacher, those teachers being: Tim Haislet, Karl Peterson, <br />Mark Vonder Haar, David Benson, Laurie Jensen, karen Johnson, <br />Maggie Knutson, Pat Wroten, Diane Carlson, Sara Falstad, Elizabeth <br />Kirk, Lynn Walstedt, Ann Zeller, and Holly Elias. <br />UPON MOTION by Peg Swanson, seconded by Jack Veach, the Board of <br />Education expressed congratulations to the students listed above <br />and their families for superior achievement in the National Merit <br />Program. Motion carried. <br />UPON MOTION by Peg Swanson, seconded by Jack Veach, the Board of <br />Education congratulated those teachers who have earned tenure as a <br />member of the Orono School District faculty effective at the <br />beginning of the 1996-97 school year. Motion carried.
