State of Minnesota
Office Memorandum
DEPARTMENT; Mn/DOT MetfO Divisiofi
DATE: October 23, 1996
TO: Leroy Vague
Railroad Administration Section
FROM: Patti Loken, P.E.
Project Manager
PHONE; (612) 582-1293
suajECT: TH. 12, S.P. 2713-75
From Wayzata Blvd. To CSAH 6
As we discussed at the meeting on October 17, 1996 with Spencer Arndt, Burlington
Northern Santa Fe Railroad Project Manager, 1 would like to start the process of
developing a Memorandum Of Understanding between Mn/DOT and BNSF for the .
above referenced project on Trunk Highway 12 in Long Lake, Orono, and Wayzata,
MN.
The project will require the reconstruction of approximately 3 miles of the railroad
starting just west of the Wayzata Public Works Facility to just east of the Stubbs Bay
Road crossing of the existing railroad and highway.
Mn/DOT proposes to change the horizontal and vertical alignment of the existing
railroad following railroad design guidelines and standards. From east to west the
concept for Alternative 6 North is as follows:
1. The horizontal curve near the DNR Luce Line Trail crossing will be
flattened from approximately 2 degrees to 30 minutes in order to avoid
impacts to (jreen Glen Park located within the north/west quadrant of the
Dl^ trail and BNSF crossing in Long Lake. To the west of this curve
through most of Long Lake, the new railroad track horizontal alignment will
parallel the inplace track approximately 55 feet to the south with only slight
variations from the existing railroad alignment until they join approximately
1500 feet east of Stubbs Bay Road.
2. The vertical alignment begins to change near Heather Lane just west of the
DNR trail crossing. The grade is being lowered using a maximum grade of
0.4 % to aid in providing clearance for overpasses at Lake/Brown Road,
I:\PJLOKEN\TH 12BA'TH 12nJL\RAlLROAD\LEROVMOU. WP
