>
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
DATE: November
ITEM NO:
Department Approval:
Name Ron Moorse
Title City Administrator
Administrator Reviewed:Agenda Section:
Administrator’s Report
Item Description:
Dental Insurance Plan
<
For a number of years, staff has been involved in efforts to find an employee dental insurance
plan that provides a reasonable level of benefits at an acceptable cost. In recent months, staff
became aware of a network dental plan that meets both the benefit and cost criteria. Staff is
requesting Council autliorization to offer this plan to city staff beginning January 1, 1997.
Dental Plan Details
The dental plan being proposed is called Premier Dental. The plan is a network plan which
provides a higher level of benefits for services provided within the network of participating
dentists. A copy of the proposal is attached. As the proposal indicates, the costs are as follows:
Employee only
Employee plus one
(Child or spouse)
Employee plus children
Full family
$15.75 per month
$30.45 per month
$30.45 per month
$39.90 per month
Financial Considerations
City policy enables employees to use a portion of the city’s employee insurance contribution to
pay the cost of the group dental insurance premium. Because the city’s insurance contribution
($313.50) is less than the cost of the monthly insurance premium for family health insurance
coverage, only those employees with single health insurance coverage would have a portion of
the city’s insurance contribution available to pay for insurance coverage.
Staff Recommendation
Staff recommends the Premier Dental insurance plan be offered to city staff, with coverage
beginning January 1, 1997.
COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED
Motion to authorize the city to offer the Premier Dental plan to city staff, with coverage to begin
January 1, 1997.
