Based on <br />his commendable performance as Acting Chief during 1995, a recommendation was made to <br />extend his appointment through 1996 and to make a decision by mid-1996 regarding whether to <br />initiate a process to hire a new chief or to permanently appoint Gary Cheswick as Police Chief. <br />Gary Cheswick ’s Performance as Acting Police Chief <br />As Acting Police Chief, Gary Cheswick took over a department that was experiencing a number <br />of problems. Based on his understanding of the causes of these problems and his knowledge of <br />police operations, he took a number of key actions to address these problems. These actions <br />were successftil in significantly improving the operation of the department. Gary Cheswick is <br />committed to ensuring the police department provides excellent service to Orono and to the three <br />police contract cities, and is committed to continuing to grow in the position in terms of his <br />leadership and management abilities. <br />Recommendation <br />Based on his commendable performance as Acting Police Chief, it is recommended that Gary <br />Cheswick be appointed to the position of Police Chief on a permanent basis effective July 9, <br />1996. <br />Salary <br />When Gary Cheswick was appointed as Acting Police Chief he was placed into the Police Chief <br />salary range at step 1. Based on his performance over the past year, it is recommended his <br />salary be adjusted to step 2 of the Police Chief pay range effective July 9, 1996. The step 2 <br />salary level is $53,830. <br />COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED <br />Motion to approve the appointment of Gary Cheswick to the position of Police Chief at a salary <br />level of $53,830 effective July 9, 1996.
