DRAFT
COMMENTS REGARDING THE HIGHWAY 12 DECISION
MnDOT ’s forecasts indicate that the Ferndale ramps will attract
about 1,000 additional trips per day. The residents living along
Ferndale Road strongly oppose adding additional traffic to a two-
lane residential street.
The cities of Orono, Wayzata and Plymouth have long-standing
commitments to each other and to the Ferndale neighborhoods that
Ferndale will not be upgraded to a four-lane roadway. The
construction of an interchange at this location may set the stage for
a future upgrading of Ferndale Road to four lane.
The iravelshed for the Ferndale Road ramps is bounded on the
west by Long Lake Road and TH 15, on the east by Broadway
Avenue, on the north by CSAH 6, and on the south by Lake
Minnetonka. This represents a small travelshed generating a small
number of trips.
It is most likely that the 1,000 additional trips will divert primarily
from TM 101. However, assuming that only half of the trips
divert from TH 101, about 500 trips per day would be diverted
from TH 12 west of Ferndale. Assuming 2015 Annual Daily
Traffic (ADT) at 25-30,000 between Willow Drive and Wayzata
Boulevard, the provision of this interchange would affect less than
two percent of the daily traffic on TH 12.
Based on the above, it does not appear cost-effective to construct
the Ferndale interchange given the minimal benefits to the
proposed TH 12 transportation system that would result.
b.) Extension of Watertown Road. The proposed Watertown Road extension is
similar to the Ferndale interchange in that the cost and impacts of the
