A
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
V>l ^
X
DATE: February 8, 1996
r/ITEM NO: ^
Department Approval:
Name Ron Moorsc
Tide Citv Administrator
Administrator Reviewed:Agenda Section:
Administrator ’s Report
Item Description: Change Orders ^"Number 1 and 2 For The Brown Road North and
Watertown Road Culvert Projects (SAP 152-107-01 and SAP 152-103-01)
Background
Two projects completed in 1995 were the Nonli Brown Road reconstruction project and the
Watenown Road culven replacement project. As these projects were in process, several
additional cost items were encountered. These additional cost items are as tollows:
A.North Brown Road Project
1. Installation of additional retaininj ’ wall
Cost
$7,423
2.Additional trees to replace those removed for construction (as part of
easement negotiations) $2,355
3. Additional storm sewer to meet MCWD permit requirements $10,416
B.Watertown Road Project
1. Additional storm sewer work $3,852
2. Additional tree replacements outside of right-of-way as part of easement
negotiations $13,7%
3. Bituminous overlay and stripping of Watenown Road from Wear Lane
to Stubbs Bay Road $44,041.65
Fxpl.mation of Additional Cost Items
A. North Brown Road
1. Additional retaining wall. The additional retaining wall was installed to avoid
the cost of acquiring an easement and replacing 23 mature conitcrous trees.
The $7,423 cost of the retaining wall was substantially less than the cost of
acquiring an easement and replacing the trees. The tree rcpiacem.ent itself
would have cost a minimum of $4,(X)0, and this would have involved the
replacement of mature coniferous trees with trees si.x feet in height. This
difference in "quality" of trees would have been made up either by replacing
the trees with more mature trees at a cost that could have exceeded $10,000
or by paying tne difference as the cost of the casement.
J
