This effort will concentrate in the <br />areas of the City currently deficient in public “open space.” <br />All large open parcels within the city boundaries will be identified <br />and evaluated for potential "open space" preservation. <br />Designate areas for potential open space expansion that are next <br />to existing parks or open spaces. <br />Select and set aside a group of existing and proposed “open <br />spaces ” for passive recreation i.e., hiking, wildlife/observation. <br />6. Identify and protect historic and unique natural areas <br />8. <br />B. Parks <br />Work with land owners, land steward organizations, public or <br />nonprofit groups, and other agencies to assist the City to set aside <br />undeveloped land as open space. <br />Identify significant corridors of vegetation that the city should acquire and <br />preserve as natural "buffers." <br />Goal: Provide recreation and neighborhood gathering areas for the use and <br />enjoyment of Orono residents. <br />1. <br />2. <br />3. <br />Assess and evaluate the existing parks as they relate to location <br />and types of recreation needs of al! citizens. <br />Select and set aside proposed parkland for neighborhood parks. <br />Identify critical land areas outside the current parks to acquire as <br />parkland. Concentrate this effort In the areas of Orono currently <br />deficient in parkland and in areas that will soon be developed. <br />Designate areas for potential park expansion that are next to <br />existing parks or open spaces. <br />C. Trails <br />Goal: Develop a city wide bike and walking trail plan that connect Parks and <br />Open Spaces in the area; and to also function as transportation corridors. <br />1.The relationship between neighborhood parks, open space areas <br />and the rest of the park system should be strengthened through the <br />proper location and use of greenways and trails.
