Open Space and Trail Commission <br />Criteria and justification to Identify, evaluate, and acquire or secure <br />undeveloped land for additional public use space. <br />Mission: Provide Parks, Open Space and Trails to benefit Orono <br />residents and maintain the natural character of the <br />community. <br />Problem Statement: <br />The next few years will be a critical time in formulating the future make-up of the <br />City of Orono ’s Parks, Open Space and Trails for the twenty-first century and <br />beyond. The remaining parcels of undeveloped land within Orono will likely be <br />developed within the next ten years. Simultaneously, these development <br />pressures threaten to expand existing and open new transportation corridors. <br />Doing this will require large amounts of land and irrevocably change the uses of <br />the "adjacent land." Thus, good planning and a vision for the future of Orono's <br />public use areas will enable the city to address the changes and prepare for the <br />future. <br />Orono’s citizens, as indicated by Digital Resources survey, are concerned about <br />the loss of open space. The results of the survey suggested that the residents <br />are willing to financially back an effort to maintain the natural appearance of the <br />community by securing portions of the remaining undeveloped area. <br />A. Open Space <br />Goal: Protect and preserve natural areas, wildlife habitats, and open space by <br />securing parcels of undeveloped land for the benefit of future generations. <br />1.Protect and preserve lakes, wetlands, woodlands, fields and other <br />natural recreation and other amenities. Including Big Island in Lake <br />Minnetonka. <br />2. Identify critical areas in Orono where we should acquire and
