FAX 471-0632 <br />Contact; Gene Strommen <br />Greg Nybeck <br />SUBJECT Milfoil Harvest Underway on Lake Minnetonka <br />FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE <br />The first of 957 acres approvec by the MN Department of Natural Resources for <br />mechanical harvesting of Eurasian watermifoil will be removed from Lake Minnetonka <br />starting June 17, according to Herb Suerth, Milfoil Program Board member. Lake <br />Minnetonka Conservation District (LMCD). <br />Phelps Bay and South Upper Lake in the vicinity of Spray and Enchanted Islands <br />will receive the initial harvesUng through June 25. The familiar blue LMCD harvest <br />machines w ill then move to the Phelps Island shore of West Upper Lake and Cooks Bay <br />starting June 26. Black and Emerald Lakes will be included in this scries of milfoil harvest <br />areas, completing this portion by June 30. <br />“This advance schedule is subject to weather cooperation and continued good <br />operating condition of the four LMCD harvest machines,” project manager Gene <br />Strommen observed. “The experienced five-member crew and supervisor Todd Grams, all <br />school teachers becoming summer milfoil harvest professionals, are returning to continue <br />the 8th year of LMCDmilfoil harvesting,” Strommen added. “The Suburban Hennepin <br />Regional Park District will add its machine and operator in late June to boost the harvest <br />capacity.” <br />Bays identified for next scheduling include Grays. St. Albans, Gideons, Carmans. <br />Crystal and LaFayette. This order of harvest could be adjusted depending on milfoil <br />growth conditions identified by aerial and water surface inspections. <br />The program is scheduled to continue ten weeks through August 22. <br />Persons wishing to report conditions in their area niay leave a message with the <br />LMCD staff at 471-9588. <br />m <br />L
