Based on the Capital Equipment cost sharing formula set out in
the Fire Service Contract, the city of Orono would pay 70.24% of this cost. The two vehicles
proposed for purchase are a used Suburban and a pickup/utility vehicle. The Suburban is to serve
as a light rescue vehicle and will be used as the first response vehicle for medical calls. The
suburban would take the place of the current 19 year old van-type vehicle that is outfitted for both
medical and heavy rescue calls. The Suburban would be much better suited to quick response to
medical calls, particularly in bad weather and on narrow and/or steep driveways.
The purchase of the Suburban would provide an ideal light medical response vehicle. Using the
Suburban for medical calls would substantially extend the life of the current rescue vehicle by
limiting the rescue vehicle to heavy rescue calls, of which there are a relatively small number and
for which the vehicle is best suited and equipped. The Long Lake Fire Department has provided
substantial information regarding the Suburban vehicle. They would like to move ahead with the
purchase of the Suburban vehicle as soon as possible. Please see the attached information from the
Long Lake Fire Department regarding the Suburban vehicle.
The proposed pickup/utility vehicle is to replace an existing 19 year old utility vehicle used for grass
fires, hauling a boat and winter rescue equ^ >irent, and miscellaneous uses. The new utility vehicle
would continue to be used in a similar way and could also be used to haul 5 inch hose which would
be useful in areas without water service. The Fire Department has not provided detailed information
regarding the proposed utility vehicle.
City Funds Available
The city has been setting aside $20,000-530,000 per year since 1993 into a fire vehicle replacement
fund. The current balance in the fund is $125,000. The estimated cost of purchasing and outfitting
the Suburban vehicle is $45,900. The city's share of this cost would be $32,240.
Ownership
The fire service agreement indicates that the cities participating in the fire service agreement will
have ownership shares in each piece of major equipment based on the amount of initial funding
