Box 66 <br />Crystal Bay, MN 55323-0066 <br />April 2,1997 <br />Commissioner Penny Steele <br />A-24 Government Center <br />Minneapolis, Minnesota 55387 <br />Dear Commissioner Steele: <br />I am writing on behalf of the Orono Mayor and City Council to express the city of Orono ’s <br />concerns regarding the impact of the extended closure of the Ridgedale Library on the availability <br />of library services to Orono residents, and to urge the expansion of services at branch libraries in <br />western Hennepin County, and particularly in Long Lake and Maple Plain, during the time of the <br />closure. <br />As the\:ity understands the plan for the Ridgedale Library building project, the library will <br />be closed for approximately two years and there are no plans to expand services at the branch <br />libraries in western Hennepin County during this period (other than the Plymouth branch) to offset <br />the loss of services at the Ridgedale Library. The Ridgedale Library ’ is an important resource for <br />Orono residents due to limited services and hours available at the Long Lake and Maple Plain <br />libraries. The closure of the Ridgedale Library will substantially affect the availability of library <br />services to Orono residents. <br />On behalf of the Orono Mayor and City Council, I request your support and assistance in <br />encouraging the Board of Commissioners and the Library Board to consider expanding hours and <br />services at the branch libraries in the western portion of the county, and particularly in Long Lake <br />and Maple Plain, during the period of construction at the Ridgedale Library.
