Broun <br />6. Marsh: <br />The map symbol for this soil is Ma and the map color is dark blue. <br />The upper 5 to 10 feet of the marsh is peaty muck or muck. This <br />covers other layers formed in what was formerly a glacial lake. The <br />watertable is near or above the surface the entire year. These soils <br />have very low bearing capacity. The development characteristics of <br />these soils are generally unfavorable. These areas are best used for <br />natural water storage and as scenic open space areas of developments. <br />7. Peaty Muck over loam: <br />The map symbol for this soil is I’m and the map color is medium blue. <br />This soil occurs in depressions and drainageways. The depth of the <br />peaty muck varies from 12 to 42 inches. The underlying material con <br />sists of gray loam, silty clay loam, or clay loam. The watertable <br />is at or near the surface except during exceptionally dry periods. <br />The soil is subject to px)nding during wet periods. There is a high <br />px)tential for frost action to roads and parking areas. <br />IV. SOIL SUITABILITY FOR ON-SITE WASTE DISPOSAL <br />The area of proposed development is not scheduled to receive municipal <br />sewer services. This means that any homes constructed must utilize some <br />sort of on-site soil absorption system for the disposal and treatment of <br />the household wastes. <br />A discussion of each soils potential as a waste disposal site follows: <br />1, Erin loam - EnB, EnC, EnD, EnE : <br />This soil is a well-drained upland soil. The watertable is usually <br />below 5 feet. Erin soils however have a large clay content in their <br />subsoil. The USDA textural classification is clay loam. Percolation <br />rates properly conducted on this soil are generally greater than the <br />60 minutes per inch required by the present Minnesota Sewage Code. <br />This would prohibit the installation of the conventional on-site soil <br />absorption system consisting of a septic tank with seepage trenches <br />24 to 36 inches deep in the soil. <br />Erin soils can in many cases be utilized for waste disposal ^d treat <br />ment if an innovative mound systan is installed. The following <br />general conditions must be met: <br />a).Percolation rate - The percolation rate in 12 inches or more of <br />natural surface soil shall be faster than 60 minutes per inch <br />and the percolation rate in subsoil and/or substratum shall be <br />faster than 120 minutes per inch. <br />b).Depth to groundwater - The depth to groundwater shall be greater <br />than 5 to 4 feet if the percolation rate is 60 to 120 minutes per <br />inch and 2 to 3 feet with a percolation rate of 30 to 60 minutes <br />per inch. <br />J <br />'I ■ <br />r i <br />• 4
